40 Years of Service: 5 Lessons the Job Taught Me

I've spent 40 years in service, 33 of them in law enforcement. I made a lot of mistakes along the way. I learned from most of them.

These are the 5 lessons I would hand to every officer on day one.

1. Empathy is a tool, not a weakness

People expect a cop to talk about pressure and command presence. I talk about empathy.

A suspect, a witness, a victim's family: they all talk to the person who treats them like a human being. Empathy doesn't excuse anything. It opens the door to the truth.

2. Slow down. Time is on your side.

On a crisis call, the instinct is to fix it fast. That instinct gets people hurt.

Time lowers adrenaline, builds trust, and gives a person room to choose a better ending. The officers who can sit in silence and wait are the ones who bring people out.

3. The way you train them is the way they'll serve

A new officer copies everything: your words, your shortcuts, your attitude toward the public. When you train someone, you're not just teaching procedure. You're shaping the next 20 years of their career.

Correct in private. Explain the why. Build judgment, not just compliance.

4. Protect the family behind the badge

This is the lesson that cost me the most.

Early in my career, I was taught that my partners were my family, and that the family at home came second. I believed it, and I paid for it at home.

You can be a great officer and still go home to nothing. I've been there. That's why Amanda and I built Til' the Job Do Us Part, so other officers learn this lesson sooner, and at a lower cost, than I did.

5. Leadership is earned, not assigned

Rank gets compliance. Trust gets people to follow you when it's hard.

The best leaders I worked for showed up, told the truth, and protected their people. That's still the standard.

Still on the job

40 years in, I'm still in the field, still earning it every day. Everything I teach at Polished Badge comes from that work: Til' the Job Do Us Part, Interviews & Interrogations, and Crisis Negotiations.

40 years of service. What Rich teaches, he lived.
